It’s only been a month since we last checked in on the construction of Essex on the Park (800 South Michigan Avenue), and the thing is sprouting like spring tulips in a Michigan Avenue median. Eventually. We promise they will.
As for the Essex, since the end of February it’s put on a dozen floors as it climbs to an eventual 56-stories in height. This time last month, it was the same height as the Hilton Chicago (720 South Michigan Avenue). Today it’s well past that stature, according to the photo above sent in by Joe Zekas of YoChicago!.
While Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture-dessigned Essex on the Park is a residential build (all the hip Millennial architects use “build” as a noun now) with 479 new residences, its older but littler brother is staying a hotel, which is the wheelhouse of its developers, Oxford Capital and Quadrum Global.
The old 14-story Essex Inn is getting 18 new rooms, and a huge makeover of its existing rooms, common spaces, and back-of-house areas.
